Courage Vs. The Olympics
His name was Karoly Tackas; born in Budapest, the largest city of Hungary on the 21st of January 1910. He was always inspired by the army personnel and their weapons. He thought that some day he will be in uniform carrying those weapons. So weapons were his dream. Whenever he went to some sports festival his great interest were the shooting games. Karolyl’s father was not a wealthy man so he couldn’t continue his education. He decided to join the army as a soldier.
He started struggling for his dream by taking part in shooting competitions and working hard for the accurate aim. He was soon recognized as a best shooter in the army, he was accurate and fast in aiming not only in shooting but also in his life. In 1936 when Berlin Olympics were held he was eager to take part in it but policy of Hungary Olympics committee was to allow only commissioned officers. He was not at all disappointed by this and kept competing in national tournaments. He knew that there is no end to courage of a man. As it is said that God helps those who help themselves . Hence God was with Karoly and due to the poor performance of officers of Hungarian army in Olympics ban was lifted from non-commissioned personnel of army. This stimulates the courage of sergeant Karoly and he started practicing harder for 1940 Tokyo Olympics but hard luck was after him, destiny again wants his test. In 1938 during the training session a faulty grenade explodes in his right hand and he lost his hand from which he holds the pistol. In the beginning he was depressed and disappointed but his aims were high. His lost hand was not becoming hurdle in front of his high moral. He couldn’t took part in 1940 Olympics but mean while he started practicing pistol shooting in the back yard of his home with his left hand. He kept this practice secret so that people couldn’t make him disappointed by calling him fool and cripple.
During the spring of 1939 National pistol shooting of Hungary was held in Budapest. Karoly went there and when others shooter saw him there, they appreciated his spirit that at least he came to watch the game of other shooters, but they were shocked to hear that Karoly will participate in the championship and he gave them a heart attack when he won the championship. Hence he made other realized that he had lost his hand but not his heart and courage. The Olympics of 1940 and 1944 were not held because of the World War II but he didn’t stopped practicing and kept his aims high. His dream came true when he was selected in Olympics team of 1948 for 25 meter rapid pistol shooting in the age of 38.he participated in the Olympics and everyone was stunned by the performance of this one handed shooter. He won the Gold medal for his country. He defeated Karlos Dyer of Argentine who was favorite for this 25 meter pistol shooting category. He shut the mouth of critics who said that how a one handed shooter could win the competition. When he came back to Hungary he was recognized as a national hero. This was not the end Karoly defended his Gold medal in 1952 Helsinki Olympics at the age of 42.He got retirement from army as LT.Colonel. This masterpiece of courage died on 5 January 1976 at Budapest. Karoly Tackas is known as a national hero and legend in Hungary. His biography is a lesson to those who are disappointed by the curse of destiny. The Olympics defeated and Karoly Tackas won.
