The National Anthem, its translation and a Patriot’s Words

The Qaumī Tarāna, is the national anthem of Pakistan. Its music, composed by Ahmad G. Chagla in 1950, preceded its lyrics, which were written by Hafeez Jullundhri in 1952. Another feature of the anthem is that no verse in the three stanza lyrics is repeated.

Tarjumane mazishane hal jane istaqbal

Sayyai, khudae zul jalal.

English:

Blessed be the sacred land,

Happy be the bounteous realm,

Symbol of high resolve, Land of Pakistan.

Blessed be thou citadel of faith.

The Order of this Sacred Land

Is the might of the brotherhood of the people.

May the nation, the country, and the State

Shine in glory everlasting.

Blessed be the goal of our ambition.

This flag of the Crescent and the Star

Leads the way to progress and perfection,

Interpreter of our past, glory of our present,

Inspiration of our future,

Symbol of Almighty’s protection.

It was her air that I inhaled first,
Her fertile soil that I took in my hands.
I am longing to praise her without lust,
For she is dear to me among all the lands.The time when I took the little steps,
She gave her gravity to make me stand.
In her lap, I have laughed at jests.
In her charm, plants burgeoned in sand.

The unheard screams and unwatched scenes,
She has been keeping them all for 65 years.
My forefathers aimed to get her by means,
The oppressed time passed, I’ve no fears.

She is robust, She is that amazon;
Who helped me grow up with strength.
On her stiff surface, I can run like fawn;
For she makes me rise for good at length.

In love with her people, I keep the hope;
That one day, we will all stand united.
Waiting for others, I am holding the rope
To come and nourish our dear motherland.
